What is Orthodontics?
Orthodontics is the science of straightening teeth to improve the appearance of the teeth and the face or to correct disordered bites. This is usually done with dental braces or removable appliances such as Invisalign®. Aside from cosmetic benefits, straight teeth are also easier to clean which improves gum health and can prevent dental disease.
Orthodontics is a speciality of dentistry with its own specialist register with the General Dental Council. Many general practitioners who are not on the specialist register carry out orthodontic treatment, but at 92 Dental we have a Consultant Orthodontist who has done 3 years postgraduate training to be a Specialist Orthodontist and then an additional 2 years to be a Hospital Consultant.
More and more people of all ages are having orthodontic treatment to improve the appearance of their teeth using dental braces. Today with the advances in technology and with less conspicuous braces available, you will find it much easier to fit orthodontic treatment into your life.
Treatment is available for both adults and children. Children can be seen for an initial assessment from about nine years of age or earlier on the recommendation of your dentist. There is no age limit to undergoing a course of orthodontic treatment, although some problems may benefit from early treatment. Dental literature has reported that more than half of all 12 year old children would benefit from orthodontic treatment.
Typically treatment can take from 4 months to 2 years depending how severe the problem is and what the end goal is.
At 92 Dental the practice is accredited to use Invisalign ®, Clarity brackets, Incognito Lingual Appliances, Six Month Smiles and Inman Aligners, as well as all the other leading technologies. To help you choose the best system here is a brief description of the most commonly used systems.

What Orthodontic treatments are available at 92 Dental?
At 92 Dental, we offer many options of orthodontic treatments to suit your needs and budget. These will be discussed with you in detail during your initial consultation with our Orthodontist. To help you, here is a quick overview of the main types of treatment that we offer.
Metal Orthodontic Braces
Metal orthodontic braces are made from stainless steel and have been used for many years. They are the least expensive system and are still very effective. They cannot be removed from the teeth, and require adjusting roughly every 6 weeks by the Orthodontist.
Clear Ceramic Orthodontic Braces
These are much less visible and look more natural than metal braces, as they blend in with your teeth. White wires can be used to further improve the aesthetics. These braces can often go unnoticed when someone sees your smile from afar, however they are not completely invisible.
Clear Brace (e.g. Invisalign®)
These are an ever increasing and popular choice for people since they are practically invisible. Invisalign® braces are computer designed and made of a clear plastic. A series of aligners are constructed and changed every two weeks. They are worn full-time but removed for eating and brushing your teeth. Our orthodontist has been specially trained by Align Technologies, the company that manufactures Invisalign.
Lingual Orthodontic Braces (e.g. Incognito®)
Lingual orthodontic braces are attached on the inside of the teeth and are the preferred option for people who want their braces to be truly invisible. The biggest drawback of lingual braces is that they can be more uncomfortable to wear and speaking can be difficult to begin with.
